Department of Mass communication and Journalism, NMSM Govt College Kalpetta, the first Govt college department in the state offering an under graduate programme in mass communication was started in 1999. Since its inception, the department has always strived to provide students a broader understanding of conceptual and applied skills necessary to engage with past and current complex media phenomena and technologies.

The Department upgraded its programme to Master’s in Communication and Journalism in 2016.  Academic programmes offered by the department reflects the diversity and excellence of media studies from diverse vantage points ranging from  Communication Theory,  Mass Media History, Political and International Communication, Mass Media Research, Media Law and Ethics, Critical Approaches to Media Studies and Digital Media Technologies. The Digital Studio in the department is equipped with sophisticated hardware and software packages to provide professional training for students. Media aspirants from various parts of the state prefer the department for their higher education. Mandatory intake for UG and PG courses is 40 and 10 respectively. Department have been successful in maintaining high placement statistics over the years by facilitating the contact with reputed firms. Department also offers an open course, Newspaper Journalism, for the interested students from other departments.

The department emphasizes the creative and analytical skills needed to make sense of current and future trends in media and to gain a deep understanding of the history and development of various means and forms of communication.

Academic Activities

During summer vacation, department offers Internship training for students with prominent media firms. Also department conducts Industrial visits, various workshops, lecture series and conferences to provide a conducive ambiance for students to optimize their learning. Students in the department will gain conceptual, technical and practical skills in media analysis, production and management.

Department is hosting a campus radio to provide students with an exposure to industry and make them aware of the working of radio stations. Hands-on training in news anchoring and video editing is provided making use of the teleprompter and edit suit in the department. Regular sessions allotted for film screening every Friday helps students to familiarize with the world of cinema.

Tutorial system with parental linkage helps to keep track of the academic progress of the respective wards.
