Department of Mass Communication and Journalism
Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, NMSM Govt College Kalpetta, the first Government college department in the state offering an undergraduate programme in Mass Communication, was started in 1999. Since its inception, the department has always strived to provide students with a broader understanding of conceptual and applied skills necessary to engage with past and current complex media phenomena and technologies.
The department upgraded its programme to a Master’s in Communication and Journalism in 2016. The academic programmes offered by the department reflect the diversity and excellence of media studies, covering Communication Theory, Mass Media History, Political and International Communication, Mass Media Research, Media Law and Ethics, Critical Approaches to Media Studies, and Digital Media Technologies. The Digital Studio in the department is equipped with sophisticated hardware and software to provide professional training for students. Media aspirants from various parts of the state prefer the department for higher education. The mandatory intake for UG and PG courses is 40 and 10, respectively. The department has been successful in maintaining high placement statistics by facilitating contact with reputed firms. It also offers an open course, Newspaper Journalism, for students from other departments.
Academic Activities
During summer vacation, the department offers internship training with prominent media firms. Additionally, the department conducts industrial visits, workshops, lecture series, and conferences to provide a conducive learning environment. Students gain conceptual, technical, and practical skills in media analysis, production, and management.
The department hosts a campus radio to expose students to the radio industry. Hands-on training in news anchoring and video editing is provided using the teleprompter and editing suite in the department. Regular film screening sessions every Friday help students familiarize themselves with cinema.
The tutorial system, with parental linkage, helps track students’ academic progress.
